“Thriller” -My Little Sculpture Project

My life is brim-full of four things: Nancy, painting, hiking and sailing. The Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival begins tomorrow  and through the weekend, and we’ve been in it many times with various boats. With a fresh coast of Doris Day-green deck paint, a friend thought I should post something about my on-going sculpture project, the smallest sailboat I’ve ever owned called “Thriller”, a 1959 Lightning #7108. If you’re in the festival, drop by and say hi. We should be along the outside of one of the lineal docks.

If you’re not heard of this festival, Port Townsend’s population triples this weekend when 300 classic boats come to town. It’s quiet a scene, with workshops, races, music and food – and a Sunday Sail-by with hundreds of boats from canoes to giant schooners.

This boat: amazing construction above and beyond what most Lightnings look like, Thriller was built by the Livingston Boat Shop in Northport, Michigan for the grandson of Kroehler Furniture Corporation owner – a rich-kid’s boat. It’s 56 years old. Much of the restoration was done by the previous owner in the Bay Area, but I’ve finishing it off, made the rig better and the hull ‘bright’. Almost all the wood is original, including the mahogany seats. With a stainless centerboard now (the original would have been cast iron) and rigged for single-handed sailing, my three-season routine is to spend a joyful couple of hours in late afternoon on Port Townsend Bay, joining the guillemots, auklets and seals exploring the best place I’ve ever sailed.

A New Website For Me – Oh Boy

I’ve probably spent too much time messing with this instead of painting, but I now have a new website, completely redesigned, lots of new stuff, lots of little interesting corners with new content. And with a total of around 390 pages and posts, things were getting messy with the old one – so, I spent some time over the holidays tearing it apart and rebuilding a more modern version.

 

This one is ‘responsive’, meaning it looks good on your phone and tablet, pc and laptop – all of them at once if you have eight eyes. It still has the shopping cart with all the goodies like the puzzles, but there are new travel albums, 24 pages of murals and park projects that are better laid out. Better search capabilities are there too.  That’s Nancy lurking behind all the backgrounds, she comes, she goes, up and down some of our favorite local trails.

Gallery Nine Show in Port Townsend

Gallery Nine in Port Townsend is where both Nancy and I show. It was just voted best art gallery in our county (and that includes Mount Olympus and the Blue Glacier).  It’s not the first time. In fact, by my count, Gallery Nine has won that award four out of the last five years, and I think for good reason. It’s a happy, fun and fairly prosperous place considering it’s remote location, and the wine and goodies at the monthly gallery walk aren’t bad either.

 

This original painting has been in our collection for awhile now, but it’s time to let it go. This was our boat for over a decade, and I did some major restoration on her. It’s a somewhat historic boat with a nice pedigree, and I still miss it. The painting was actually to commemorate the new sails we just bought. Notice the new sail ties, the pure whiteness of the main (soon to change after some use and stress). They match the color of Nancy’s hair that is just barely visible through the open hatch (that got that way by use and stress).

 

I’ll be in the Wooden Boat Festival this coming weekend with our new boat, a Lightning named Thriller, and the gallery show opens on Saturday evening from 5:30 to 8pm with wood-turner Chuck (CW) Stern. Come down for both and say hi and help me sell out the show on its opening night. I’ll be on the boat most of the weekend.

Wooden Boat Paintings are Back

I’m  having a show at Gallery Nine in Port Townsend that opens September 7. For many years I’ve built, rebuilt, painted wooden boats, sailed them to Alaska, California and Mexico (well, that one was plastic made from goo) – and of course I painted pictures of them – lots of them. I think of wooden boats as sculpture created from natural materials and shaped into something that actually moves, and moves by the power nature provides – the wind. They’re a marriage of form and function, designed and created to fulfill a difficult task in an alien environment that is always trying to kill me. They’re beautiful, they carry us to distant places of extreme natural beauty, and do it almost silently. I paint wilderness because I truly believe it is important, and  I sail wooden boats as a way to be closer to wilderness!

So, we have a new boat now, a 1959 Lightning and it’s fairly well put back together so I’m putting it in the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival in September. As a little trip down memory lane for me, I dug around in our private collection and came up with some wooden boat paintings we’ve kept back, and these are going in the show. I’ll also have a bunch of less expensive Giclee prints of many of my favorites as usual, but some of the paintings haven’t been seen in years – and I think it’s a pretty sound body of work. So, this is the first blast of publicity before it opens. Join wood-wizard Chuck Stern and me at Gallery Nine September 7th if you’re local. AND, then this: a couple of weeks ago an old childhood friend stopped by for a visit. He reminded me of my FIRST wooden boat, and coincidentally I happened across this photo a few days before. Here I am (at the mast because I wasn’t sure how to steer yet. At age 14, I built this little craft in my basement, well, my parent’s basement. My mom was instrumental, as usual, in my wicked ways to run me astray. We didn’t have a power tool in the house because my dad was an intellectual and classical pianist who thought it beneath him to even pound a nail. But, somehow I bought some plywood, cut it up and put this thing together from Popular Mechanic plans. Mom sewed the sail – I bought a TV antennae for the mast and spars. I had to take the cellar door off to get it out and my dad claimed I was ruining his house – but the thing actually worked. Well, almost: we had to stay near shore because it leaked like an old sock. Still, I did it, and it began a sailing journey I’m still on today, five decades later. And yes, I’ve learned how to steer, even on a black night in a soupy fog.

48 North Magazine Cover for November

 I write a monthly feature page for this magazine, 48-North, and occasionally they put one of my paintings on the cover. This month they have my sketchbook story about moon snails and the cover painting is of our 1940 classic wooden Monk sloop, Sea Witch. Wow! While we sold the boat to a Canadian couple two years ago, I still have vast and fond memories of this craft, and of the four big boats we’ve owned, for me Sea Witch was the best – a perfect boat. This painting is called “Otters on the Dock” and when I painted it, I offered it up as a totem to the two river otters that would occasionally pay us a visit and poop all over the cockpit and bright work with stuff that is too awful to even think about. I thought that maybe if I payed homage to these two, they’d cut it out. No such luck.

As I go down memory lane right now, 30′ Sea Witch is a pretty famous boat in the Northwest, having been used as a floating adventure for not just Nancy and I, but also Jo Bailey, who for decades used the boat to write countless cruising stories and several books. Also in the painting are my summer dockside geraniums. There’s a sweet wooden sloop without an engine that my neighbors would sail in and out of the slip with only an oar to stop them. Sparkle in the back that was by far the fastest wooden sailboat boat in town, and the Portside Deli (a fine place for lunch or afternoon coffee). But marinas evolve, and today the only subjects of my painting left in place are the engineless sloop and the otters. And I’m not sure about the otters.

Here’s a photo of Sea Witch at her launch in 1940 in Seattle, sent by Pete VanAtta, son of the gal christianing the boat. She was the daughter of the builder standing in the back.  These old boats seem to create extended families.

Yellow Rowboat

A classic double-seat rowboat with a wineglass stern of the Whitehall design, this is one of many similar boats at Lake Union’s Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle. I just love the two blue paint swipes on the oars – the only paint anywhere on the boat, and masked off to hit the water at just the right angle when someone is rowing with them.

For me, it’s a painterly study of reflections and bounced light, the subtle way varnished wood both brightens wood color, and reflects the glow of sky light. If you know me, you understand I think of these historic craft as sculpture, the perfect union of form and function. There’s nothing frilly on this boat at all, and every piece of wood is there for a purpose that’s been worked out through trial-and-error. Yet there isn’t a single thing that was put on to make it more beautiful for the sake of beauty. It doesn’t need it. Even the cotton (not synthetic) string holding the asymmetrical oarlocks to the boat has a graceful arch. Some say art should be thought-provoking and culturally relevant of today’s society. I’d say this is just that, showing how far we’ve fallen from the desire to create functional beauty – but don’t get me started about today’s constant mantra of cheaper-is-better.

48 North magazine in Seattle has always been very good to me, and this month is no exception. It was Wooden Boat Festival time here in Port Townsend, and so, just as they did last year, one of my paintings landed on the magazine’s cover. They do a good job in these days of struggling print magazines, but now 48 has begun to move into the digital world. It’s now entirely online and free. Check it out. Clark Island and Mount Baker

I ran across this unfinished watercolor in my studio. Clark Island is one of the more remote places in the San Juan Islands, about 40 miles north of here. Very few people ever stop here, but I sure have. Boaters all seem more interested in getting to the bars in Friday Harbor or Roche, or the beaches on Sucia Island. Nancy calls it the herding instinct.

So, I was anchored here in our little boat, just around the corner to the left, and went ashore to do this painting – it was maybe five years ago. As I sat there, I remember a single wasp landing on the water glass. And then another. And then a whole family – and then some. Well, time to leave, which I did at a somewhat rapid pace after dumping over the water with my shoe. I figured it was the fresh water they were going after. Fresh water’s actually a pretty rare commodity here on these rocky islets, and in summer it doesn’t often rain. That was enough for me to just say to myself that I’d finish this thing later.

And so I just did! Pretty fun, like I was back there again enjoying this quiet little anchorage with the wasps and a very big view of Mount Baker. And if someone asks, as they sometimes do, “just how long did it take to do this painting” I can honestly say “oh, about five years”.

This ORIGINAL painting is old watercolor and new ink on Arches paper, 10″ x 14″ and $239 unframed. (that works out to be something like $50 a year, or about $4 per month. Typical artist wages!

Herring Balls

48 N September 09

Cover art and story – 48 North Magazine, September 2009. (48 North is the premier sailing magazine for the Pacific Northwest) This month features my painting of our little sloop, Sea Witch, sailing by downtown Port Townsend. They also featured my short story about herring balls.
Sorry if this is a long entry, but the story’s a good one and I’ve shortened it abit.

Fish Balls

An amazingly nice afternoon! Get the sail covers off Sea Witch. Back her out. Head down the channel and out into Port Townsend Bay. Then, get the sails up, sheet’r home. And away we went to the north out into Admiralty Inlet, watching the freighters and navy ships tooing and frowing. A warm northwesterly wind was gently spilling out from the hills of Port Townsend and into the bay. It was tee-shit weather.

We hadn’t made it to the Mid Channel Bank when ahead we could see a great mass of moving birds. Actually, there were several masses of birds, all wheeling and spinning, diving and making a ruckus. “Herring balls” we both said at the same time as we nodded in unison. The birds were going crazy. About fifty glaucous-winged gulls were in each group, and more flying in as fast as they could from other areas nearby. Cormorants, rhino auklets, a few pigeon guillemots and even a bunch of mergansers were all bobbing about, diving, grabbing at others nearby and generally making a “happening” as I use to say 40 years ago. The gulls couldn’t dive very deeply, being very buoyant-birds, so they just gave it their best, plunging from about five feet into the water and grabbing at nothing. “Mine, mine, mine, mine!” they all yelled continuously. It was a riot, and as we approached, none of the birds seemed to care we were there. Then a slow, huge and powerful swirl of water nearby showed something else was going on below the surface. Unseen until now, a sea lion was there as well, circling up from below to concentrate the herring ball close to the surface. A 650 lb, 8 foot-long sea lion can make an impression on everyone, including tiny fish. It was intense – and this was just one of about six riots of wildlife within our view.

Well, I knew what was going on, but maybe you don’t, so here’s what these big events were all about.

Pacific herring are little fish, and if you’re a little fish, you can gain odds for prolonging your life if you stick together. A bunch of little fish can become a very big fishy thing if you hang out together – think teenagers hanging out! One teenager – no big deal, but a half a million of them and you get Woodstock. That’s the herring teenager’s idea too, but there are lots of bigger critters out there trying to dine on them. There’s not a moment’s peace. And while sticking together can increase your odds of individual survival, it also announces to everyone where you’re hanging out.

Most Puget Sound herring spawn from late January to early April, depositing transparent sticky eggs on eelgrass and marine algae in shallow water, mostly in quiet bays and estuaries. Each female deposits between 20,000 and 40,000 eggs a year, and it’s these sheer numbers that insure the herring’s survival. These sticky eggs cling to eelgrass stems, and, after about 14 days, hatch into small transparent larvae about a half-inch long. The little critters are at the mercy of currents as they drift about, but the larvae that survive grow until after 3 months when they are about 1½” long, when they metamorphose into adult fish, eventually growing to become six to nine inches long. Think sardines in that square little can, but bigger. Most of us know Pacific herring from bait shop freezers, where we see them lined up in blue Styrofoam trays.

On the second or third year, herring normally return to their original spawning grounds. Unlike salmon, spawners don’t normally die but continue to spawn in successive years, although most don’t make it past five years of age. A few may live to the ripe old age of fifteen. However, it’s been estimated that, for every 10,000 herring eggs, ONE adult will live long enough to return to spawn, such is the level of predation on these little fish. In Puget Sound, we, as the dominate prey species, have decided that spawning herring make up 18 different “management stocks” (because we, as herders of the world’s critters need to count all this stuff so we know how much to “take”). In the past, herring have been caught for food, then caught and ground up for oil and pet food. Some of the eggs are used (in Canada) as high-end gourmet food for Asian markets. The reality of it is that the many seabirds, marine mammals and larger fish species have a greater need and eat these important little fish to help them survive. Fewer orcas these days? Well, it might be that a bunch of us dropped our anchors in those wonderfully quiet back bays where eel grass beds live, our 45lb Danforths tearing up the bay’s bottom and depriving herring of good quality habitat for them to lay their eggs. Or, more likely, shoreline trophy home owners have altered the spawning grounds off their front yards by adding elaborate stone walls and lawns that use chemicals that then run off into the nearby waters – killing the ecosystem they spent zillions of dollars to live next to. Fewer herring means less food for salmon, an important food for orcas. Fewer herring also means less food for orcas, too, which catch them the same way seals do. In Puget Sound, 60-70% of the herring are eaten by larger critters each year, and the numbers of herring is decreasing each year. Get the picture?

We watched the herring action for awhile longer as we sailed past, then headed over to the next ball of birds and fish. Out of that cloud of wheeling and screaming gulls, a lone rhinoceros auklet flew by at top speed holding a 3” flapping herring in its bill. You could almost imagine the bird’s thoughts of “I got mine, now I’m getting out of this party as fast as my little black wings can carry me.”

Well, so what? So what’s the big deal with watching a bunch of birds? To me, it’s a matter of the quality of life. Sure it was a pleasant day for a sail. The scenery was beautiful, the company wonderful, the experience memorable – but experiencing the herring balls made it much more. We had watched nature at a very close range, beyond the beach and parking lots, beyond the signs that say: Wildlife Viewing Area. Out here on the waters of Puget Sound, a daysail can turn into a real experience if you just look for it. Many sailors might have just sailed by, maybe only worried their sails might get a dab of bird doo on them. Some wouldn’t have even noticed, for it seems that many of us have diminished attentions these days to the natural world around us. We spend most of our lives chained indoors, watching nature on monitors or TVs, watching movies about penguin marches or watching others do what we once took for granted we’d do ourselves which is to seek outdoor experiences. Well, I’m telling you those experiences are still there, still waiting for us, and still exciting to see when we let them into our lives. I’d like to think that, with a good-old recession now altering our grandiose lifestyles a bit, we may begin to think about returning to the old ways of enjoying ourselves. Get outside, get in a boat, get your eyes open again and see a few things. You might find you like yourself more for these experiences.

Sea Witch – One heck’ofa boat

This week, I was going to send out a painting I just finished of Sol Duc Falls, but I received so much good mail last time about the saga of Rumpy, our old boat, I decided to tell you about the boat we now have (another art project). It’s a pretty interesting tale, and the past few days I’m giving her fresh paint in the boat yard, only a few hundred yards from Rumpy.

We bought Sea Witch 10 years ago, soon after giving up Rumpy, because, well, you just can’t be Boatless Near Seattle. Built in 1939 in Tacoma, Sea Witch was designed by Ed Monk Sr, probably the most famous boat designer in this part of the country, and in fact Rumpy was designed by him too. For the boat’s first 25 years, things went along in fairly normal style until the Bailey family bought her in the 1960’s. Five kids, dog, cat and both parents Jo and John would all stuff themselves aboard this little 30′ boat and sail off for the summer. According to the kids (who are all adults now), things never went all that swimmingly, but something must have clicked because most of them still love to sail and the boat lives on in iconic family history.

Then things got serious! In the 1980’s Jo went started writing sailing stories and cruising books, and because of this, just about everyone around the Northwest knows about Sea Witch. I had even purchased a signed book with Sea Witch on the cover back then and still have that copy. Jo continues to write today and occasionally includes Sea Witch in her tales.

So a decade ago it was our turn with the old girl. She needed a complete restoration which took me several years – and was quite some job. All this is well documented with scads of photos on our website if you’re interested (click here), but what I want to really show is that this boat and its dingy (shore boat) has since become the subject of an entire portfolio of my paintings. Not only that, but I’ve also written Sea Witch stories for the Seattle Times and supplied covers and stories for Seattle’s 48 North magazine. This beautiful and graceful shape, a classic example of form and function combined, doesn’t have a bad view. This is not so with modern boats sporting reverse transoms and plastic hulls. Sea Witch not only sails well but is a joy to portray. Like the graceful curve of a beautiful woman’s back, this boat’s shape gives me great pleasure to look at. For that matter, she’s a joy to slap paint on too.

Here’s a favorite image of mine showing where she lives. If you look closely, you’ll see two river otters on the dock. While they’re cute, these little bandits come on board and leave amazing messes you can’t even imagine. I was sure if I painted this as homage, they’d leave me alone. Hah!
