On a Hoh Rain Forest Fall hike a few years ago, we had a sapsucker befriend us. A sapsucker-experience! It flew down onto the trail in front of us – and just started walking with us. Didn’t seem to be in a hurry, or on any sort of mission, it just led the way but walked next to us. We thought it was entirely too friendly to be safe, but I now imagine it was looking for insects we might scare up. Scientific, not a hint of the metaphysical experience as probably usual for me. That’s my parent’s fault, I think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so, when I saw another sapsucker recently and then painted it, I wondered if it might be the same bird visiting to just check on us. That head and chest color is just unmistakable, like deep wine, and the entire creature was just as striking as it sat on a red-alder. It’s the way with me, get an idea and make a painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea of the red-alder was my attempt to show the complexity and diversity of these Pacific Northwest forests. Imagine a small bird navigating through all this green-stuff. I think it’s an amazing life to be able to mange it.<\/p>\n\n\n

This painting is on canvas board, 12″ x 9″ and your choice of frames. Frames are included. It’s a wholesale price, what I’d get if this were in a gallery. I’ve met the best and most interesting people doing it this way. A gallery sale and I wouldn’t met anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
