Merry Christmas – but\u00a0where’s winter?<\/strong>\u00a0Here in the Northwest, as well as along\u00a0most of the West Coast, we’ve had the driest December on record. Winter just doesn’t seem like it wants to get started. Days have been warm and sunny, nights clear and cool. Sure, it’s not summer when\u00a0during June you can read a book outdoors until almost 10pm when there are 16 hours of daylight on the Olympic Peninsula – but this is just fine.<\/p>\n

I find it just awful for painting landscapes during summer around here. Dramatic light is simply non-existent – sunset lasts about a minute and a half, tops. Sunny, then, wham, it’s dark.\u00a0But Fall and Winter, now we’re talking. These days it seems like the sun goes on setting for hours and we only get\u00a08 1\/2 hours of sunlight each day.\u00a0I’m not complaining, because finally I have something dramatic and\u00a0interesting to paint – and it doesn’t take much of a scene to make a light-filled image just bursting with color. Luminous!<\/p>\n
