Powell Butte Mural Installation in Portland, OR

 I completed this painting last year, and last week received a photo of the installation from Linda, Senior Designer at Sea Reach, ltd in Sheridan Oregon, who is doing all the great interpretive exhibits. I think it turned out pretty well. The original task here was to show the Portland Water District’s watershed, from the Cascades all the way downstream to downtown Portland – water pipes, gate valves, Bull Run Lake – the works (waterworks). Somehow it turned into an enormous vista, pieced together into 12 panels in high-pressure laminate that are all meshed together. Portland, 16,000 feet up! I remember getting the idea while flying back from California on a plane and looking down as we went past. If you look at the door on the right you’ll get a scale of this thing.

And the building? It’s on top of Powell Butte on the eastern side of town, east of I-405. Powell Butte has now been hollowed out and the two gigantic covered reservoirs built inside it will hold 100 million gallons of Portland’s water – no pumps, all gravity feed. There’s a nature park on top, with trails and this new visitor center, shown here under construction back in October.

I like nothing better in life than a bit of adventure, figuring out how to do something I’ve need done – or even considered. Someone asked me when I was going to retire. Ha! I think the word RETIRE is shorthand for REALLY TIRED, and I’m sure not that  yet. I just want to stay relevant, to continue to contribute and not get left behind as the rest of life moves always onward past me. Give me more amazing projects like this and I’ll be a happy painter. Currently I’ve got my mitts into several amazing bids for some large (and confounding) paintings – so let’s see if they happen. Stay tuned!

24′-wide Digital Scan of My Portland Mural

 I wrote about this painting when it was about 80% completed on November 18th, 2012. Here’s the finished version, and now, thanks to Carl Beebe at ColorOne in Seattle (a very cool guy who’s been in his business as long as I’ve been in mine), the final scan is now finished and now ready to be printed and installed on the wall of the new Powell Butte Visitor Center in Portland, Oregon.

Short explanation: that sheared-off section on top is where the ceiling goes – and the brown box on the bottom is a 30″ tall cabinet. Chick on the picture and it should enlarge so you can see some details, such as downtown (a really challenging mess of buildings) and how the heck you go about painting suburbia from 16,000 feet, or 3 miles up. If you live in Portland, tell me if I got your street in the right place and your house color is correct.

And here it is in the building design plan. It covers one entire end of the place.

This is a fairly new way of creating wall murals. For decades I would go on location and work for weeks at painting it right on the wall. A lot of work, a lot of expense in travel time, room and board. Now, with the advent of really good color scanners and high-end digital printing, this has all changed. It allows me to paint these things in smaller sizes, like 50% of the final size so that it gets it down to a painting I don’t have to live on a ladder to create. I have a die-sublimation sample next to me here on a piece of polyester cloth that is a sample of one of these, and they tell me it can actually be tossed in the washing machine and slapped back on the wall. Amazing technology – and so many light-years from the old way of creating art that I sometimes wonder if I’ve lived too long. On the other hand, because I have these old-time painting skills, a little drawing ability and a high degree of computer skills, I seem to continue to get these amazing jobs.

A Portland Challange

I left this image fairly large on the web server, so if you click it you can see some details.

For the past few weeks I’ve been plodding along with this painting on the same studio wall right next to the Florida mural. That’s my home these days, second floor of Union Bank in Port Townsend. Now, with the Florida-thing more or less finished, I’m on to this like our Harry Cat is on bonito flakes – and I’m closing in.

This painting is far enough along that I thought I could put a photo of it in the plan specs to see how it might look. The building is 24′ wide, 12′ high. The blue lines below represent where a glass cabinet will go, which might show you how big this thing will be when it’s installed.

The scene is Portland Oregon looking east from about 3 miles up. That’s downtown right in the middle, the Columbia Gorge on the left, Willamette River snaking across from the right. When finished, this will be printed on high-pressure laminate panels and installed in a new visitor center at Powell Butte (right in the middle of the painting) where a big water-works project is taking shape. I’m working with Sea Reach from Sheridan on this, the same good folks I did the Mt Saint Helens paintings for two years ago. The idea is to show the Bull Run watershed near Mt Hood where Portland gets its water – with a delightful airplane view of the entire area. It’s been a challenge to figure out – to say the least. What DOES this place look like from 3 miles up? I’ve flown over it enough on commercial jets to sort of know how it might ‘feel’, but it’s still been tough to figure out. And this IS a painting, afterall, and not a photograph, so I’ve had to understand how reality translates into little dabs and dashes of paint. Am I getting it? Stay tuned for the final edition and I’ll let you know what they say.

Here’s my preliminary sketch. Sure looks different from how it’s looking now, don’t you think?

Florida Mural Progress Report

This week it’s just a post about my progress on the central Florida mural. We’re getting there! I posted the initial beginnings a few weeks ago here (September 29) and here (September 9), then we were off on a field trip to Point Reyes so things ground to a halt. Now I’m back in the downtown studio going at it.

 

 

Someone emailed and asked what I used for a palette. Here it is! It’s pretty simple, only about a dozen colors and I use Nova Color exclusively, a special small-company hand-mixed mural acrylic that’s like a milkshake (tube paint is much more paste-like). After I discovered Nova about 20 years ago, I’ve used nothing else and it’s a pleasure to paint with on everything from the biggest cinder block walls to tiny paintings on paper.  You can’t buy this stuff in stores – only online, but I’ve had them ship to me in the field and they’re wonderfully helpful.

 

Here’s the rest of my ‘kit’. A tablet for reference photos (and a few printed out paper references too), dirty paint jar of water, a squirt bottle to keep the paint fluid, and, of course an iced latee from Mean Bean down the street (or Better Living Through Coffee, or Starbucks, or… this town doesn’t lack for Washington’s state drink). And that’s a full-sized paper copy of the sketch in the background so I can figure out what to paint.

Polk Mural Progress Report

Here’s the sketch. I blogged about this a month ago. This is for the Polks Nature Center in central Florida.

 Painting Day 1 on September 13th: 4′ x 12′ piece of Yupo paper is tacked to the wall, primed and shows progress at the end of the first day of painting.

 Painting Day 3 on September 23, and the basic structure is in place, but now the park folks want some major changes on the left side. Sigh, but now’s the time for big alterations, not when the details are in.

Painting Day 6, sandy areas appear on the left and the horizon is smoothed out. Areas of the background in the center and upper right are tested for color and value, shadows and light. Some critters are blocked in so I can check sizes.

Painting Day 10 September 28, and the thing is taking shape. More critters are defined, trees on the left are gone, trees added in the middle, water is defined better, center part of the painting now shows upper canopy and trunks of the pines in place and ground details are starting to appear.

All these photos should enlarge so you can see them better. This is not being painted on a daily basis while my life progresses in other ways, meaning there were four days out at the Hoh Rain Forest, time spent while I’m replacing 400 feet of new cedar decking, and now we’re off to Point Reyes National Seashore this next week for a field trip. Oh, and I did four presketches for paintings for a Portland project.

Again I want to thank Union Bank in Port Townsend for continuing to give me studio space for these larger projects. I’d be really cramped in my little studio here in the meadow for this one.

Historic Photo Exhibit for Port Angeles WA

Historic, maybe because it took over a year to get this installed on the Port Angeles, Washington waterfront! I’m not complaining at all – because for me it was fun and meaningful. I learned a lot.

So, with a bit of funding from Olympic National Park and guidance and direction from the Feiro Marine Life Center – text by Deborah Moriarty and Betsy Wharton, photos from a bunch of dead photographers plus two that are still alive, and this all came together nicely.

While the only thing I PAINTED was those two little black bands on the wall, I spent some considerable time in the Port Angeles Historical Society with my flatbed scanner. Most of the photos were very old and only 8″x10″ or less. Technology went to work when I clicked the button, and what seemed like hours later I had some pretty amazingly scans. While that was going on, I had the rest of the collection to myself – oh boy! One of the scans was 8 feet long, and most were more than 36″ on the long side, so, that’s when the work began for me. Back in my studio, I spent many hours (I should underline MANY) going back and forth across these old scratched up images removing hairs, cuts, thumbprints (whose we’ll never know), tears, frayed edges, bug squashes – and in the end I think the results looked like they were taken last week with the highest quality camera.

(Here’s a tourist immediately enthralled by the quality and detail of these old images.) After fretting over the text, Deb and Betsy refined it to a very high degree of quality – and that’s from me who does this stuff daily. This is good – and they should be proud!

Oh, but I didn’t tell you the photo’s story. The Elwha Dams have now been torn down on the biggest river on the Olympic Peninsula. These dams have been here almost a century and provided electricity that made Port Angeles a real city, lighting houses, stores and powering mills. But with the dams the salmon runs ended, and so now with the dams gone, the salmon are IMMEDIATELY coming back. Only a few months after the lower dam’s removal, King Salmon are already back above the old dam site. This wheel I’m holding is the same wheel that first turned the power ON almost a century ago, and just a few months ago turned it OFF.

As an artist and naturalist my entire life, I feel so honored to have been apart of this event, the largest dam removal in American history. I consider it part of my legacy. For the dams, park and salmon, I’m nothing but a guy with some skills, but for me – I was there!

A New Life for Lahonton Wetlands

My first Nature Conservancy commission was this mural of the marshes east of Reno, Nevada. The original painting hangs in their offices in Reno, along with about 2.000 posters floating around the West. Now, almost 20 years later, another image will be installed in the new BLM California Trail Interpretive Center, eight miles west of Elko, Nevada. I just sent the final scan and it’ll be 17 feet wide by 10 feet high, proving that art never dies, it just gets reprinted.

Back when this was painted, there weren’t digital scanners like we have today. I remember I had it photographed in Sacramento and found the 8″ x 10″ film postive transparency still there in our lock box on Kodak film that’s not even made today. It was a color-perfect shot and scanned up 2500% just beautifully. How big was that file for a 17′-wide image? The Photoshop layers file was 2.4 gigabits, and I admit my computer took some time to process it. Smokin’.

It was almost 20 years ago when Nancy and I were doing field research for this painting in the dry lakebeds and marshes around Fallon, Nevada. It was the only time either of us have been on an airboat – basically an airplane engine and prop on the back of a big rowboat. What a thrill it was to just glide over these bull rushes and “fly” around miles of marshes. We eventually ended up at a beach just like this one where the US Fish and Wildlife Service guides showed us fresh water clams, reminders of the ancient Paleo landscape when these dwindling lakes were giants from Ice Age runoff.

Ancient Bristlecone Pines mural

The third and center painting for the Schulman Bristlecone Pine Grove east of Bishop, California was finished this week. Put together, this wall is going to be about 17 running feet of pure high-country paintings. This final one is 5 x 8 feet on stretched canvas and I was really pushing it to fit into my little studio. Several times I almost gave up and went downtown to a larger space, but I wondered how I’d get it in the car. In the end we muddled through and now it’s great to see all three together. Since there was really no room for me to line them up to check (inside, at least), this is the first time I’ve seen them all together. I think it’s going to work.

Bristlecone forests are a beautiful but stark and colorless landscape because the trees are all bleached out by thousands of years of sun, the rocks are white dolomite – and flowers are few here at 10,000 feet. And since some of these trees are almost 5,000 years old, the oldest on the planet, they really look gnarled and sculptural, so that’s what I ended up concentrating on. Paintings of sculpture!

Port Angeles and the Elwha River Wall

 

Not that I’m complaining, but just when IS summer play time? Well, not right now.

I’ve been working on three sizable projects at once. This one is my current midnight-panic-attack. It’s not my usual painterly-project, but interesting as always and I’ll be posting progress in the next few weeks (on the project, not my nighttime worries that it won’t be finished in time).

So… if you’ve read these posts over the past year, you’ll know I’ve created a bunch of art and interpretive panels for the Feiro Marine Life Center in Port Angeles, WA. This is the next phase of that, an outside 39-foot wall collage near the other installation. Opening date is September 17th when all sort of luminaries come to town for the kick-off of the Elwha Dam removal project, the nation’s largest dam removal and river restoration so far. I’ve been involved with this unfolding event in many ways over the past few years, and it’s exciting stuff for both Nancy and I. The very fact that they’re using art to interpret this visionary project is very forward-thinking.

My job this time is to create a dozen panels that tell the story of how the dams changed the region over the past century – and specially the town of Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula. Betsy and Deb are providing the fabulous text like they did on the other installations, while I’m doing the signage, computer design and handling the fabrication and installation. Like a giant jigsaw puzzle, this all has to fit together somehow. For once it’s not a mural or original art, but I’m learning lots about the region’s history at at the Clallam County Historical Society. I grew up watching my mom research history this same way, except that now I have a laptop and flatbed scanner. Times have changed.

I’ll post more as this gets closer and the details are filled in, but for now the photo shows where we are – in mockup stage.

Necedah Wildlife Refuge installation

 Last week, someone asked:“what happened to that last big mural you did in, where was it? Necedah Wisconsin?” And, as life often gets by me, I had to say “beats me, haven’t even seen a photo of the installation.” So, with an email and a little poking around on Flickr – here it is, or at least a part of it. You can only see about half of the 130 feet as it goes around the bend and off into the sunset. If you remember, these were the two paintings that were scanned and printed at 300% from the original, then hung like wall paper. I’d say it looks pretty good – at least in the photo.

Some people are shocked when they find out that I not only didn’t go to Necedah for research (too much snow – couldn’t have seen what I needed anyway), but that I didn’t go there to install it (someone else’s job). I’m not sure I liked that, but that’s the way these things go sometimes. No going for research was difficult and I certainly could have used a few hours on the ground with my camera. It’s the details I just can’t get from a few on-line photos, like how the ground looks, how plants grow out of it, how much downed branches and logs, how varied the plants are between sunny and shady areas – endless stuff you normally don’t notice. Sure, a species list helps, but how many, where do they live and which ones did I need to use? In the end, I just made it up from years of doing this stuff, and everyone seems to like it.

When I was growing up as a backroom brat in the Illinois State Museum where both my parents worked, Robert Larson was museum staff habitat diarama background painter (now there’s a business card title). He was a pretty famous dude – but to me he was just the tall guy that threw paint around. I’d go down there and watch him do his stuff and he painted amazingly artistic, huge yet realistic backgrounds for exhibits that looked so real you’d swear the wolf moved each time you saw the exhibit (turned out they had an extra wolf mount they switched out occasionally). Watching this guy paint was my only training for painting these big canvases, and here it is a half-century later and I’m still at it – so, he must have had the magic that so influences kids they are determined to spend the next 50 years trying to do the same thing.

The huge, really really huge difference is that Bob Larson could take a year to do the painting you see here – and I did it in 35 days!!
