2026-7 Meerkerk Gardens is in the Freeland/Greenbank area northwest of the Seattle area on Whidbey Island. For the past couple of months I’ve been working on these 9 paintings for this public garden, the testing garden for the Seattle Rhododendron Society’s new hybrids. I’ve gotten to know the people and place and if I come back with any say of how I’d live, I’ll pick living here – in the old Meerkerk house surrounded by acres of old Douglas-fir and blooming rhodies. It’s a rare place.

That said, I got to paint this wonderful place for new outdoor wayside panels – and make portraits of some of the people responsible for it.

These will be plaques under the rhododendrons they created. I believe Yasmin Workman is the only surviving member of this group. These are acrylic on paper.
