Some free time between commissions. We currently have a family of American goldfinches here in our meadow, hanging out around the pond, on the hanging feeder. Just such an astonishing color to see in the dark conifer forest, I just had to make a painting of the ongoing experience. This is a small painting, 5″x7″, framed makes it to about 7″x9″ on the outside and it looks somewhat like the real thing, the male I saw here last evening!
Some painting details some might be interested in: The underpainting is a mix of much lighter sienna and ochre, giving it all an impression of a painting that might be a couple of hundred years old. Over the acrylic underpainting, I used oil, mostly Van Dyke brown on the background with some sap green mixed in on that top part. I brought a blow-down branch in from our forest with some lichens on it, but didn’t want to burden it with too much detail that might take away from the bird. No drawing, just went at it with my brush. I can easily go crazy for a branch with lichen on it. Heck, I could fill up an entire wall with lichens and branches.
This painting is at wholesale price, framed with free shipping on my Etsy gallery here. https://www.etsy.com/listing/4517973025/american-goldfinch-larry-eifert
And don’t tell me it’s too cheap.
