Three new paintings, small efforts in oil or acrylic on canvas. They’re all 6:x6″ on canvas. These two mediums paint very differently, so in some ways this was a comparison to getting two root canals. I seem to be settling into the acrylic mode for now since I’m also involved with a long list of park projects, all painted in acrylic except the Salmon Cascades which is in oil.

The top one of the little red-backed vole: I was doing research on this little guy and realized I’d never actually made a proper painting of these really common forest critters. I see them in my own forest all the time, but usually running for cover. This is a painting of Salmon Cascades in Olympic National Park. Just to the left is one of my wayside panels with a painting of what’s under the water here, salmon swimming in circles waiting to jump. Countless people have photographed that panel after not seeing any salmon. And a little 6″x6″ of a savannah sparrow, another research painting for a park project. Savannah’s are close cousins of song sparrows, the little yellow patches the only clear giveaway of who it is.
